The oil pump in your car is needed to ensure that engine oil reaches all the moving parts that need lubrication during engine operation. Most modern engines have a wet sump (the oil tank under the crankshaft), and this is where the oil pump is installed. So do you know the various types of oil pumps?
A standard oil pump will meet or exceed OEM specifications. The standard pump will fit most engines. It will provide adequate flow and pressure for stock to medium performance engines.
The high volume pump will push more oil through the system. It has larger gears and can move more oil per revolution.
These pumps are for high performance engines with large bearing clearances. The added oil will help maintain oil pressure and eliminate heat.
High-pressure oil pumps fire at high pressure to help ignite the injectors, and these pumps are used as engine lubricating oil. These pumps have other uses in Ford trucks, including as hydraulic fluid to help run the small actuators in the engine.
The bypass valves for the high pressure pumps have stiffer springs. This allows greater pressure to be built up before bypassing the oil back into the pan.
In addition to this, they are used for various purposes such as for transmission tensioners, for timing belts and valve timing systems.
These pumps are necessary for high-revving performance engines. If you are racing at 7,000 rpm, you will need 70 psi. For some pumps, you can change the relief spring to increase or decrease pressure.

High oil pressure doesn't "wash out" your bearings. Too much heat from low oil flow can overheat and damage your bearings.
This is usually caused by too little bearing clearance.
Compared to conventional injection pumps, these high pressure oil pumps do not produce any pressure. It produces a certain amount of oil for the injectors, not pressure.
The injection pressure produces 450 to 3000 psi on the 7.3L engine and 450 to 3600 psi on the 6.0L powerplant and is controlled by the PCM (the microprocessor that controls the entire injection system). It acts accordingly by receiving information from ICP sensors, engine oil temperature sensors and other sensors.
High-pressure high-capacity oil pumps have larger gears and stiffer bypass springs. These pumps are only used in high performance racing engines.
