Whether you've recently been in a collision or you have an older vehicle that just needs a facelift, replacing your front bumper can be an expensive process. When you take your vehicle to the store, you're at their mercy.
The cost of replacing a passenger car bumper will depend on.
The make, model and year of the vehicle
Whether it is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or aftermarket bumper
The cost of a new bumper on a passenger car can range from $100 to $1,000. The cost to install and paint a new bumper can range from $200 to $600. Bumpers for pickup trucks, SUVs and luxury vehicles will have a higher cost.
However, if you replace your front bumper yourself, you can save a lot of money. Even if you don't do the work of replacing your bumper and instead just buy the bumper and have a store install and paint it for you, you can still save a lot of money.
Before we get started, know that this job is much easier when you have a helper. These are not heavy-duty truck bumpers, which are durable steel that is not flexible. Instead, bumper covers are large, flexible parts that are often inconvenient when one person is replacing them. Two people working together makes this job easier and faster to complete. There are many bolts and/or push-pin plastic retainers, so keep in mind which bolts go into which holes. The plastics under the hood can take a beating from heat and age, so they can become brittle and break when you try to remove them. Have extra new retainers on hand so you can rest easy if you break some of them. When you're done with the bumper cover replacement, take the vehicle to a local body shop for preparation and paint work to ensure it's like new. Since you've already done some work for them, you should see considerable savings.
1. Set the parking brake and open the hood. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Consult your service manual, or visually locate the bolts or retainers holding the bumper cover in the engine compartment. Depending on your model, these can be removed with a small flathead screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, socket, or trim removal tool. Not that you may have to remove a plastic trim cover to access the bumper cover bolts.
3. Move to the front of the fender liner and remove the fasteners there.
4. Then remove the bolt and retainer at the bottom of the bumper cover. If the bolt is stuck due to road grime or corrosion, hit it with WD-40, PB Blaster or rust inhibitor and let it soak for 5 minutes before trying again.
5. Remove the bumper from the car. After removing all the bolts and retainers, which are held in place by clip-on molded plastic fasteners, you can simply pull on the bumper to loosen it. Pull the bumper cover straight off and forward, away from the vehicle. Pull the driver's side and have an assistant pull the passenger side at the same time.
6. With the bumper cover off the vehicle, the attachment is still attached. Put the cover down and remove all fog lights, turn signals, grille, cover, sensors, electrical connectors and wires.
7. Replace all accessories onto the new bumper cover. Note that you will most likely need to bring the tow hook access cover and any small bolts and retainers to the new bumper cover.
8. Place the new bumper cover on the front of the vehicle and install any wiring, fittings or lighting before using the molded fasteners to snap it into place.
9. Reinstall all fasteners, starting with the bottom bolts and retainers. Note: If your vehicle has a web for smooth air flow, make sure it is secured to the bumper cover so it does not catch air flow, as this will quickly damage it.
10. Reinstall the fasteners in the fender liner, making sure there are no gaps between the liner and the new fender. Reinstall the fasteners in the engine compartment. Check the alignment of the bumper cover with the other body panels and adjust by tightening the fasteners as needed to complete the bumper cover replacement.
