How do I adjust the clutch pedal?

Dec. 29, 2021

The clutch plays an important role in helping the driver control transmission shifts while driving. The role of the clutch is to disconnect the power from the engine to the transmission so that gear changes can be done easily.

Since its role in resisting rotational friction between the engine and transmission is considerable, the clutch pedal height and free play settings will change gradually. If we let this happen too late, then you may run into bigger problems due to clutch slippage and gears not engaging.

There are two main aspects about how to adjust the clutch pedal. The first is the height of the clutch pedal and the second is the free play of the clutch pedal. See the clutch pedal height and free play in the diagram below.

So here they adjust the clutch pedal for different types of clutch pedals step by step. Please refer to the complete steps below.

Clutch pedal height adjustment

The first thing to do is to adjust the height of the clutch pedal. The clutch pedal height is the distance of travel between the clutch pedal seat and the floor. Each model has a different height range value, so it is best to check your car's service manual for proper adjustment.

Typically, however, the clutch pedal height uses a range of values between 7-9 inches (177 mm - 228 mm), or if your clutch pedal height value is incorrect, you can adjust it with the brake pedal height.

To adjust the clutch pedal height, you will need some tools such as a metric open-end wrench, a flashlight or pendant light, and a 12-inch ruler.

Adjusting the clutch pedal height

1. Check the clutch adjusting bolt position in the diagram below. The picture on the left shows a model of the clutch pedal with a hydraulic clutch system and the picture on the right shows a model of the clutch pedal with a mechanical clutch system.

2. Use an open-end wrench to turn the lock nut counterclockwise to loosen the lock nut.

3. Turn the adjusting bolt counterclockwise to lower the clutch pedal height and adjust the clutch pedal height to the specified height range, and turn the adjusting bolt clockwise to raise the clutch pedal height.

4. If your clutch pedal height is appropriate, turn the locking nut clockwise to lock the adjusting bolt.

After the clutch pedal height is adjusted, the next thing to do is to adjust the free play of the clutch pedal. Please refer to the following steps:

Clutch Pedal Free Travel Adjustment

The clutch pedal from Shindary needs free play in order for the clutch to fully engage and effectively lock the engine and driveline together. Not having enough clutch pedal free travel is like putting your foot on the clutch pedal while you are driving. It will loosen the clutch slightly and allow it to slip, which can actually wear out.

The general dimensions used for clutch pedal free travel distance are in the range of 0.5-1.18 inches (15-30 mm), but be sure to check your car's manual guide for information on recommended distances.

To adjust the clutch pedal height, you will need tools such as a metric open-end wrench, a flashlight or pendant light, pliers, and a 12-inch ruler.

Since there are many models of clutch systems, we have divided the clutch pedal free play on how it can be adjusted by its mechanism. One is the clutch hydraulic model and the other is the mechanical clutch model.

A. Hydraulic model clutch pedal free play

1. To adjust the free play of the hydraulic model, we use the clutch master cylinder push rod. Check the figure below to adjust the clutch pedal free travel.

2. Use an open-end wrench that fits the size of the lock nut, and then loosen the lock nut.

3. Use pliers to rotate the pushrod inward or outward. Turning clockwise will shorten the push rod and increase the clutch pedal play. Turning counterclockwise lengthens the pushrod and minimizes clutch pedal play.

4. Adjust the free travel of the clutch pedal according to the specified dimensions (e.g. 0.9in).

5. Retighten the lock nut while holding the push rod so that it is fully locked and will not loosen.

B. Clutch Pedal Free Travel on Mechanical Model 1

1. Look at the following diagram to adjust the free play on Mechanical Model 1

2. Use an open-end wrench to turn the self-locking nut

3. Turn clockwise to minimize clutch pedal play and counterclockwise to increase clutch pedal play.

4. Adjust the clutch pedal free play according to the specific dimensions recommended for your car.

C. Clutch Pedal Free Play on Mechanical Model 2

1. View the diagram below to adjust the free play on Mechanical Model 2

2. Pull out the clutch cable until the adjusting nut is free to rotate

3. Turn the adjusting nut clockwise to minimize the clutch pedal play and counterclockwise to increase the clutch pedal play.

4. Let the clutch cable return to its position and recheck the free play value of the clutch pedal.
