A Guide to Maintain the Fuel Pump

Aug. 17, 2021

The fuel pump plays the key function of delivering fuel to the vehicle engine. Every modern car with a fuel-injected engine has an electric fuel pump. It is a sophisticated piece of equipment whose job is to transfer a constant pressurized supply of fuel from the fuel tank to the fuel injection on the engine. The most annoying part of this pump is that it suddenly stops working. However, you can avoid this situation by properly understanding, maintaining and maintaining the fuel pump. Today,  I'd like to share a guide to maintain the it.

As this job is very important and it is also difficult to access the pump because of its location, the pump is usually built robustly.  Many auto mechanics are of the opinion that a fuel pump should last the entire life of a vehicle. However, with years of driving and neglect, the pumps often fail and have to be replaced. Usage and fuel quality are the two most eminent factors on which life of a pump depends. To ensure the good condition of a vehicle's fuel pump you need to follow certain guidelines of maintain.

Quality Fuel

For many car owners, filling a quality car with quality fuel goes without saying; anything else would be tantamount to pouring bargain basement champagne into a Dom Perignon bottle. While the price of lower quality fuel may seem appealing, remember it is often cheap for a reason. To ensure your car is receiving the ideal fuel for maximum efficiency, make sure to only stick to fuel of high quality or of some famous brand.

Never keep the fuel pump empty

You cannot let the fuel level fall below a quarter of a tank. The pump is an electrical device and it heats up while doing its job. Manufacturers have thus put the pump inside the tank to keep it cool. If it does not remain immersed in gas all the time the purpose will not be solved. Moreover, when the tank is empty and suddenly gasoline is pumped in, it can give a thermal shock to the pump.

Do not get fuel with dirt

Gasoline mixed with debris is less common these days, as most of the station try to keep high-quality gas. If you approach a station to refuel and find they're having fuel delivered, its best to drive on to the next one. When the pumps are being refilled, all the common dirt and deposits that usually settle to the bottom of the tank are stirred up. Whilst your filter will be able to catch most of it, there is a high chance some impurities will reach your fuel pump, potentially clogging it, or causing damage.

Change fuel filters

You need to replace fuel filters on a yearly basis. Regardless of what is mentioned in the manufacturer's manual or how many miles you have traveled it is essential to change them so that no debris can enter the pump.

Regular check-ups

As with your own health, giving your car regular maintenance checks from a mechanic will keep your car in prime condition. If you have any doubts about the efficiency of your fuel pump, it’s best to get it checked out. After all, a small mechanic bill is cents compared to the cost incurred by severe engine damage or complete failure.

Regular maintenance of the fuel pump is very important. These tips can keep your vehicle's fuel pump in perfect working condition and prolong its service life.
